INTRO
Here are a couple of utilities for OpenSong that myself and a friend have cobbled together (and now a few from Jonathan Corwin). Actually they consist of a Word document/Macro and an OpenOffice Template/Macro (and Jonathan Corwin's SOF & PowerPoint macros) to help with the importing of text lyrics into OpenSong. We hope at some stage to do a Web Interface for song leaders to paste in their songs and have them converted and emailed to the computer operator (or whoever enters the songs into OpenSong at your Church/Youthgroup etc. and/or the person entering the song). We would also like to either create a standalone app or enhance the macro to be able to output to file in the datafile type (xml) used by OpenSong so the file can be saved/placed into the OpenSong song directory. We may never get around to it though :-)
Note: There may be no need for you to 'Import' your song(s) into OpenSong as Gareth has created an online database for sharing songs for OpenSong. You can Upload/Download songs from the OpenSong Share Service at http://www.opensongshare.wanadoo.co.uk/ NOTE: It seems that this fantastic resource has since been shut down )-:

Unreleased Development
VERSION
2
First released version
VERSION
2dot1
Changed the keyboard shortcut for running the
macro to CTRL K from CTRL I (so as not to overwrite the italics
shortcut)
VERSION
2dot2
Fixes the 'Empty Verse' problem from previous
versions that was caused by multiple blank lines in between verses.
VERSION
2dot3
No longer gives you an extra but empty verse
tag at the end of the song. The extra verse didn't effect the song
adversely but it is neater without it.
This version also Selects
and copies the results after converting so you can switch straight to
OpenSong and paste your song into the song editor.
If more than 10
verses (unlikely) it won't do the above but will display a DialogBox
indicating this fact and tell you to modify any remaining [Vx] tags
manually,
VERSION
3
New macro that calls openimport for the basic
conversion but also asks the user for the song Title, Author,
Copyright, CCLI# etc. (note that only the Title is compulsory). The
results are then saved as an OpenSong file (default 'My
Documents\OpenSong\Songs' unless OpenSong is not installed, at which
point it defaults to My Documents) using the entered song Title as
the filename. The Instructions/Help is also reorganised and the
'openimport' macro itself is slightly updated.

SONGS
OF FELLOWSHIP CONVERTER
I have a macro available for converting the 'Songs of Fellowship' series of songbook files. It is a dirty hack of a macro I found for converting SOF to a different format. Unfortunately I havn't got 'Chorus' support working yet so the chorus just gets a verse tag like everything else. You can get the .bas version here htt://newittan.hollosite.com/SOF.bas which you can import into word (using the visual basic editor in word) OR you can download a word document containing the macro (and basic instructions) here http://newittan.hollosite.com/SOFconvertmacro.doc Don't forget that is is only a dirty hack and I have only tested it on a part sample of a SOF file. If anyone enhances it, especially if they get the 'chorus' working then please email me. NOTE: You may wish to try Jonathin Corwin's SOF converter (above) in preference to this one.
LINUX VERSION OF OPENSONG:
If anyone want's to try an Unofficial linux version of 0.9.9 then you can download it here http://newittan.hollosite.com/opensong.ppt (for a little while anyway) BUT you will need to change the .ppt extension to a .rar extension (as my free host won't support any archive file type download over a certain size and .ppt was the first extension I found to allow the download). You will then need to unrar it. Place the OpenSong directory (and everything in it) on your linux box (I have mine at /usr/share/OpenSong/ You will also need to set the execute permission(s) on the 'opensong' file within the OpenSong directory. If you then try and run the 'opensong' executable by double clicking it within your filemanager you will probably get a 'path not found', or something like that. You need to go to a console and run it with this command ./opensong (from within the OpenSong directory). Remember this is UNOFFICIAL and buggy version and a few things probably won't work as they should or won't work at all but if you want to have a fiddle with OpenSong on Linux before an official linux release and can't compile it yourself then this might be for you. It is 3.34 meg

FAQ
What will this macro do?
Hopefully it will allow those who do not care about chords etc. (or who want to add chords later), to quickly (relatively speaking) convert a song in plain text format (see instructions in the downloaded documents) to a format that OpenSong can use. Especially useful to those who have five minutes to go before Church starts and the song leader brings in the words for the songs in some sort of text document and you need to get it into OpenSong fast before the service starts.
Why did I create this Macro?
Well for me actually, but I thought others might benefit from it as it seems that importing songs (especially large numbers of them) is not something that OpenSong does easily yet. One of the biggest issues that, to me at least, seems to make it hard for importing is the need to put a space in front of EVERY single line and if you miss a line your song will display incorrectly. With this macro I am trying to automate the process of inserting the space in front of the lines. I am also automating the insertion of the Verse markers [V1], Chorus [C] markers and Bridge [B] markers.
I suspect that it will still take a fairly large amount of time to import large numbers of songs but hopefully this macro can drastically improve import times, especially for those who are not overly familiar or confident with adding songs in a totally manual fashion.
I get an empty verse in my 'imported' song. Why?
You
probably have more than a single space in between some of your
verses. The (Word) macro (version 2dot1) at least, doesn't handle
multiple lines between verses very well. I'll try and fix it soon. In
the meantime remove any extra spaces before running the macro.
Note:
This problem is fixed in versions equal to and above
OpenSongImportV2dot2.doc
Is there going to be any improvements/updates?
If I get around to it (or if something better doesn’t come along) I might improve the macro or make something better to try and automate it even more but I might not either. Feel free to improve it yourself , but if you do please share it with everyone else.
I have an improvement/modification/ideas/similar program-link to../know of other OpenSong Utilities etc. etc. and want to contact you about it.
You can email me at newitech@gmail.com but be aware that I don't check this email account overly regularly (at present anyway) as it is not my primary email address.
